26th December – Too many turkeys
The craziness of the English football fixtures over Christmas was taken a step further this year in that all of the games on Boxing Day were being broadcast by Amazon. In the end it turned out to be to my advantage. Family commitments meant that I couldn’t attend the Southampton game – I had the benefit of a few days at my daughters (who did not have a SKY sports subscription). It turned out though that she did have Amazon Prime so I was able to watch the second half.

It felt in many ways like I was watching two teams – the one that travelled well and the one that toiled helplessly at home. This was Bournemouth (and West Ham) all over again.

There appeared little in the way of squad rotation.

It was more painful viewing. The 3-4-3 formation was ditched at half time but little seemed to change. Inevitably as more players were pushed forward in search of the equaliser Southampton picked us off on the counter for a second goal.

Credit Southampton for a professional performance but our home form is the worst I can remember.

We’d had our fewest shots (10) in a game this season and had now lost 5 of the last 7 league games.

Luckily for me I could switch the TV over and grab another turkey sandwich. For the paying customers it was yet another disappointment.

Somehow we were still in 4th place. Clearly everyone else (bar Liverpool, Leicester and Man City) were just as bad.

If you can guarantee a fixture to raise a Chelsea team it is against Tottenham. Add a certain Jose Mourinho to the mix and that’s spicy enough. It had been highlighted in the media leading up to this game that a certain Ethan Ampadu had led the Leipzig defence to a clean sheet and win against Tottenham in the Champions League. The poor lad had been struggling for game time on loan yet due to injuries he’d stepped in and played a blinder. Ferdinand on BT Sport had heaped praise on the young lad. I had to chuckle. Statistics told us that the next best team in the league on current form since Jose joined Tottenham (after Liverpool) were the men from North London. The Man in The Shed 24 th August – Young guns Sitting down on a Saturday lunchtime, nice sunny day, I had to feel optimistic as I tuned into BT Sport. Norwich had certainly taken the Championship by storm last season and despite taking a hammering at Anfield they were being applauded for their style of play. And Pukki was their new hero – proving that Championship strikers really can make an impact in the top flight. Our teamsheet showed a last minute change with Pedro feeling a hamstring in the warm-up and being replaced by Barkley. A perfect start – Abraham scoring within five minutes ! I’d barely composed myself and we’d conceded ! Where was our midfield ? Barkley was still struggling to realise that he was actually playing and not warming the bench. A very open game and after 15 minutes we’re ahead again. Mount proving that he really has what it takes in this league.
